Introduction to Takuhon - Workshop with Charlie Ash

Introduction to Takuhon
Try the craft of Takuhon, an ancient form of 3D printing, during a half day workshop with tutor Charlie Ash.
This workshop is an introduction to Takuhon, which is the oldest known form of printmaking. Developed in China two thousand years ago to print stone inscriptions in situ, Takuhon marks the very beginning of our relationship with the printed image.
Using a similar principle to frottage, Takhuon can be used to print surfaces and objects which would be impossible to put through a press. Through a process of moulding paper and dabbing ink, the technique produces a highly detailed and tactile reproduction, somewhere between sculpture and printmaking. You will learn how to make and use the simple materials needed for Takuhon, which include rice glue, inks, Tampo inking pads, and Japanese paper.
We’ll practice printing in the studio with a wide range of found objects, including inscribed stone and wood, metal hardware, tools, ceramics and homeware, and various textured plastics, which can be transformed into intricate, engaging prints. Takuhon prints can retain the volume and texture of an object, or be unfolded and run through a press - experimentation is greatly encouraged!
