Exploring Print Processes on Fabric - 8 week Course NEW!

Exploring Print Processes on Fabric

This exciting new course brings together a number of processes in order for you to explore & experiment with printing onto fabric.

Week 1- 2 Introduction to screen printing and making photo stencils.

Introduction to screenprinting on fabric and understanding textile design by printing a piece of multi coloured fabric.

Designing a photo stencil that can be used to print with both acrylic inks and then in future weeks with dyes layering with paper stencils and other printed techniques.

Week 3 Sublimation printing

Sublimation printing allows a painterly effect through transferring paintings and mark making directly from paper on to fabric using a heat press or iron. In addition masks and nature can be used to print from and layers built up.
Explore the many different effects possible using sublimation dyes.

HALF TERM WEEK 30th May - NO CLASS

Week 4 Lino print on fabric

Explore motif or tile type designs and cut your own lino design which can then be printed as a repeat on to fabric.

Week 5 Procion dyes with paper stencils & screens made with Anne

An introduction to printing with procion dyes covering mordanting, fabric preparation and setting the dye. We will make stencil screens to use alongside the screens created with Anne in week 2.

Weeks 6 Gelliplate printing on fabric

We will explore the fun of using a Gelliplate to create your own fabrics using textile medium and dyes. Gelliplate monoprinting is a fun, experimental and intriguing way to create unique, textural and colourful patterns and art. Use everyday items (e.g. string) and natural objects (e.g. leaves) to create textured prints. We will also prepare our screens using a range of these items on a screen using thickened dyes and leave to dry, ready for week 7’s breakdown screen printing.

Week 7 Open screen - Breakdown screenprinting

Breakdown screen printing is an experimental, organic method to create uniquely printed fabrics with exciting colours, textures and distressed marks. We will print our screens and enjoy the surprise of this exciting print method.

Week 8 Decorative screenprinting

We will explore a range of decorative screen printing techniques, including foiling and puff binder.

Please bring along a variety of pieces of natural fabric such as cotton, muslin, linen and silk to print on to.
