Katagami & Katazome Weekend Workshop with Rachele Dickie NEW!

Katagami & Katazome Workshop

We are really excited to bring you this new workshop with artist Rachele Dickie.

Katagami is a Japanese technique of hand cutting stencils and Katazome is the art of applying a resist to the fabric though the stencil before dyeing with indigo. This patterning technique was developed to apply repeat patterns to long lengths of Kimono cloth.
Over two days, you will learn about these traditional Japanese processes. You will look at original designs as inspiration understanding the different techniques of stencil cutting before planning out your own design and cutting it out with a scalpel.
Using your stencils as well as commercial stencils you will then apply the Japanese rice based paste to your cloth, creating a resist. Once dried this will then be dipped into indigo several times building up a depth of colour.
A piece of stencil paper will be provided to create a small design 10cm square, additional paper will be available to purchase from the tutor.

A small amount of fabric will be provided to create samples, but you may wish to bring additional fabric, this should be natural - cotton/linen/etc.

Rachele Dickie is a member of GPC and an experienced textile artist inspired by nature. Having completed a textiles HND as a mature student a number of years ago, Rachele has gone on to develop her textile surface design skill base and experiments with different ways of printing on fabric creating art pieces. Much of her work is inspired by local walks and makes use of plants through eco printing, natural dye and monoprinting with plants.
