Summer School - Natural Pigments into etching ink with Fiona McIntyre ARE

A one day course learning how to prepare and mull ancient natural pigments in oil for etching. Some materials have been locally sourced by Fiona such as yellow/orange ochre from Tamar Valley Devon and red iron oxides from the Golden Valley Gloucestershire and Duns Scotland. Other prepared pigments include green earth and vine black.

Fiona has spent the last few years experimenting with these beautiful pigments in painting, drawing and printing. The more precious mineral pigments such as lapis lazuli and malachite etc. can be used to hand colour etchings and Fiona will bring a ready prepared watercolour set and pigments for students to try.

Learn how to sieve, levigate and mull foraged pigments. Participants will be taught the alchemy of transforming pigments and then ink-up an etching plate to pass through the press. Participants will also be shown a useful method for transferring ink into tubes to take home.

Suitable for all abilities.

Basic materials, tools, ink and paper will be provided. Additional materials may be available to buy from the tutor or the art shop next door. We limit our course numbers to 6 - in order for you to get the most from our tutors and the facilities.

This course is suitable for all levels. Please wear old clothes and bring an apron.
