A weekend course exploring ochre earth pigments and printmaking. Learn how to make rich natural paints and inks from pigments that have come directly from the earth as well as monoprinting techniques using plants and chine collé to produce vibrant earthy prints.
Ochre is a naturally occurring pigment found in earth rich in ferric oxide. The Forest of Dean is one of these places and printmaker Nichola Goff has been collecting and using these pigments in her work. Earth pigments produce beautifully rich tones ranging through yellow, orange, red, purple and umber, they are relatively simple to process and often used for paints and dyes.
In this workshop

DAY 1: Learn how to grind, sieve and muller earth pigments from a raw material into a fine powdered pigment that can then be used for inks and paints. Participants will learn the techniques and recipes for water colour paints and etching ink producing their own set of earth pigment watercolours and natural pigment printing ink.
DAY 2: On the second day, using the inks we have made we will explore the wonderful, spontaneous techniques of monoprinting. We will use the earth inks, plant materials, drawing and chine collé papers to produce a set of experimental prints using hand printing methods as well as a printing press.
Participants will take home a set of earth colour watercolour paints, a tube of unique earth pigment etching ink and a set of hand-made monoprints.

Nichola Goff is a multi-disciplinary printmaker from the Forest of Dean. Nichola works with printmaking, natural pigments, photography, installation and social practice to explore human connection to place and nature. Nichola runs a community print studio The Yard Print Studio in Drybrook in the Forest of Dean.

All materials included. Additional materials may be available to buy from the tutor or the art shop next door. We limit our course numbers to 6 - in order for you to get the most from our tutors and the facilities.

This course is suitable for all levels. Please wear old clothes and bring an apron.

COVID-19 Precautions

Students may be asked to wear masks and gloves.
Presses and shared equipment are wiped after each session with antibacterial cleaner.
Extractor fans will be switched on during courses downstairs.
Students on courses run in the downstairs studio will have access to both the upstairs and downstairs toilets.
Students will need to bring refreshments with them.
