Foundation in Printmaking - New 14 week course, extended to include Letterpress!

We are really excited to offer this NEW! extended exploration into the world of Printmaking.

If you are new to Printmaking or want to update your skills, or try something new, this is a fantastic introduction to the GPC and its facilities. The course is delivered by 6 of our talented tutors, who are highly experienced in their Print Disciplines.

You will immerse yourself for 14 weeks in creative exploration & skills building in: Relief Printing, Intaglio, Screen Printing, Fabric Printing, Letterpress, Collagraphs & Mono-printing, and Lithography.

These 2 week, 3 hour sessions will give you the opportunity to explore the techniques before potentially embarking on one of our specialist courses later on.

Weeks 1 & 2 - Collagraph & Monoprinting with Christine Felce MA RCA (Downstairs Print Studio)
Mono Prints are unique Prints made using a range of different techniques that can produce painterly or textured marks, blocks or colour or line work, the possibilities are endless. There will be an opportunity to make card cut plates that can achieve either intaglio or relief effects (or both!)

Weeks 3 & 4 - Lithography with experienced lithographer Cathy Mills who amongst much training, has attended the Tamarind Summer School in New Mexico.
Induction into the magical process of lithography which allows a wonderful variety of mark making. Drawing is done onto either flat stone (limestone) or aluminium plate and then printed. The process allows the image to attract ink and the blank areas to repel ink.

Weeks 5 & 6 - Etching with Dr. Wendy Rhodes (Downstairs Print Studio)
Traditional intaglio etching with metal plates. During the two sessions you will draw into a hard ground with etching tools, etch your plate in acid and discover how to apply tone with aquatint. Learn about ink and paper, and create some beautiful images, using the etching presses.

Weeks 7 & 8 - Silk Screen Printing with Christine Felce (Upstairs Screen Studio)
Explore Screen printing, the process of pressing ink through a stencilled mesh screen to create a printed design. You can use your own drawings or photographs to create multi-coloured layered imagery.

Weeks 9 & 10 - Linocut with Beth Jenkins (Downstairs Print Studio)
Introduction to Linocut relief printing. Learn the basic skills required to make your own Linocut prints; from designing and cutting, to registering, inking and printing. We will print using both hand burnishing and the presses. It promises to be a lot of fun!

Weeks 11 & 12 - Printing on Fabric with Anne Haworth (Upstairs Screen Studio)
Printmaking on fabric with Anne Haworth, an experienced artist & textile designer. She will introduce you to screen printing on fabric, working with colour and producing textile designs. You will use paper stencils to build up fabric designs in multi coloured layers using pigments.

Weeks 13 & 14 - Letterpress with Lucy Guenot (Downstairs Print Studio)
Learn about setting type, traditionally and playfully with Lucy Guenot.

The tutors involved in teaching this course are all very skilful printmakers with many years of printmaking experience between them. You will learn a great deal over the 14 weeks, both about printmaking, your strengths & interests and the breadth of facilities and courses the GPC has to offer.

We limit our course numbers to 6 - in order for you to get the most from our tutors and the facilities.
