Monotypes from the Landscape
Monotypes from the landscape
Working from photos and/or sketches of the landscape we will explore the wonderfully expressive method of the monotype that allows for great subtlety and nuance in an image .
You will draw on inked up ‘plates’ (sheets of acetate) with various implements from toothbrushes to credit cards to produce expressive and atmospheric images from which the prints are taken.
We will start of predominantly working in monotone with other colours overprinted later using separate ‘plates’.
Images are built up by both wiping away the black ink to create the lights and/or adding in the darks using implements like fingers, rollers, chair castors etc.
The technique embraces serendipity and encourages accident which can help break down our preconceptions and leads to new outcomes.
It would be really helpful to bring some source material on the day, drawn from the landscape or from photos which have an emphasis on light and dark, shadow and silhouette as the technique lends itself to interpreting light shifts and drama in an image.
All materials will be provided and extra paper will be available to purchase at cost on the day.
Suitable for both novice and experienced printmakers.
