Introduction to Printmaking 6 week daytime course

Introduction to Printmaking

If you are a beginner in printmaking or want to update your skills, this is an excellent introduction to the GPC and its facilities. The course is delivered by various tutors experienced in screen print, relief printing and drypoint etching. On completion of this course you could then embark confidently on one of our more in-depth courses.

Two sessions are based around an intaglio printmaking process, which also has links to etching and collagraph. Dry point etching involves mark making and inscribing an image into a dry point plate. During the course you will use etching tools to indent the surface of the plate as well as applying grounds like carborundum grit; the ink is then rubbed into this textured surface and printed using an etching press to create beautiful images.

Two sessions will introduce you to lino printing. Learn a range of lino printing techniques, from design to cutting, inking and printing. You will learn how to print in black and white and which are the best tools and equipment to use. You will print your work on our relief press.

The final two sessions of the six weeks will introduce you to screen printing, a very different process which involves pushing ink through a fine mesh onto paper. This began as a technique used to print large quantities of posters by graphic designers, and has evolved in the hands of artists.

The tutors involved in teaching this course are all skilful printmakers with many years of printmaking experience between them. You will learn a great deal over the six weeks, both about printmaking and what the GPC has to offer.
